The Dish

I take my kids – Pikelet & Lollo - everywhere whenever we go out to eat.  And when I tell people that the little munchkins eat everything from sashimi to lamb chops to lentils, they’re astounded. For one, I love eating and I’d like my children to share my passion. As soon as they could eat solids, I was pureeing filet mignon with truffled mashed potatoes for their little taste buds. And secondly, I write food reviews so it forces us all to eat out on a regular basis anyway.

We’re lucky we live in Dallas where there is an incredible smorgasboard of restaurants to choose from and I’ve found that nearly every restaurant  has something to offer children. I’m not talking about the dreaded Children’s Menu with the ubiquitous ‘chicken nuggets, mac & cheese and cheese pizza’.  Our children are just like us, only itty bitty. They are armed with all the same senses so why not start their culinary journey early.

Pikelet who is 4 years old can order his own sashimi, he can tell you if he fancies tom yum goong or a tom kah gai for dinner and he knows that if he behaves, there’ll be slices of Scottish smoked salmon waiting for him as a reward. Lollo’s only 2 and tapas is his thing. At 18 months armed with a handful of words, the little tike requested his favorite tapas restaurant on a weekly basis.

And that is how, the Itty Bitty Foodies blog began. So join me & my Itty Bitty Foodies as we embark on our yummy adventures together!

Here’s to our next Happy Meal!

  1. Cheryl (Meet in Dallas Mama)! I love the blog! Looks yummy. Please keep it going. I have just gotten into cooking and love new recipes all the time. I do not have a kid to cook for (I cannot believe you are up to TWO now!)… You know a GREAT place for food…. San Francisco! You should check it out here :) … I will actually be in Dallas next week for a HUGE wedding. Hope all is well. – Carolyn (ex Meet in Dallas fan).

  2. A great food adventure with the little ones. We’re coming along for the ride Cheryl! You are so right, there is really so much out there for the young ones to eat that is not on the kids menu!

  3. I old friend! I just lierally stumbled across your blog! Looks FANTASTIC! Happy late bday to sweet pikelet. I can’t believe that our boys are 5. We think about you and the boys all the time. Please let Beefcake (LOL) know we said hello. Best wishes and good luck with the blog!

  4. Can you adopt me please?! Filet mignon and truffle mash……mmmmmmm

  5. My little one, not so little anymore, was raised on anything and everything. She wants me to be her roomie when she goes off to college coz she wants a private chef; she claims she’ll miss my cooking. I pity da fool who takes her out to dinner for the first time. The one thing I am thankful for is that she is not hooked on foie gras or caviar yet, which means more for me! Yea!! BTW, I am glad you enjoy Si, they do have the best food of all the tapa joints in town, plus the location/backyard-view can’t be beat.

    Regards,

    René
PS- stay tuned…coming in the not so distant future…”Another Watel’s” will feature decadent and sinfully delicious dining in a come-as-you-are attitude with reasonable prices…why should we dress up and pay a fortune just to eat delicacies (?!)
