TOGA – Taste Of Greenville Avenue
The weather looks like it’s cooperating for this Saturday’s 3rd Annual Taste of Greenville Avenue (TOGA) event unlike last week’s mosh pit at the Texas Veggie State Fair. Bring the kids, wear a Halloween costume and nibble food from over 27 Greenville eateries like The Grape, new Korean fusion Rohst, Rusty Taco etc and listen to live music. The menu items are presented in small portions costing between $3 and $6. Wrist bands ($2) are required to purchase alcoholic beverages (beer and wine) in the TOGA Beverage Center.
Healthy Halloween Snacks! Mummies in a tomb, devilled eyeballs & goblin teeth!
Boo! We are getting right into healthy Halloween snacks that doesn’t involve candy. The kids loved making the Mummies in a Tomb (our take on the pigs in a blanket) using puff pastry and helping assemble the devilled eyeballs. The goblin teeth made of apples are wonderful for that ghoulish Halloween smile! Do try these recipes at home!
Toni Rivard – Cakeballs + Giveaway!
The name, “Toni Rivard” of Crème de la Cookie is synonymous with cakeballs in Dallas. Naturally when Rivard developed her new upscale bakery concept located just outside of Neiman Marcus at NorthPark Center, she used her namesake. The tiny outpost is as fashionable as the department store it sits in front of.
Texas State Veggie Fair
Pikelet & Lollo keep asking to go to the ‘fair’ this year but I’m not a fan of bringing kids so young to the State Fair of Texas. The rides are geared towards older kids and the food is not exactly healthy. The place is just too enormous and after an hour or so, we always end up carrying one of them. So this year, we’re still going except it’s the Texas State Veggie Fair! The event is on Sunday October 23rd at Winfrey Point at White Rock Lake. It promises funnel cakes and hot dogs and other fun fair food, except it’s vegan. There’s even a fried food contest! (see vegans can be fun!)
Electrifying your Jack-O-Lantern
Being from Australia where Halloween isn’t such a big deal, I must admit that I’ve never carved a pumpkin before – until today thanks to the kind folks at TXU energy who organised a lovely pumpkin carving event at Central Market on Lovers Lane. Matthew McIntosh (“just like the apple” he says) from Central Market gave us step by step instructions on carving.
Home Made Mini Corny Dogs!
The State Fair of Texas is so much fun! And for many of you who grew up here, you have many fond memories of rides and corny dogs. Here is a simple recipe for home made corny dogs that I wrote up for Artizone - click here for step by step instructions. When you make your own you know you can control what you eat – yes, try it with a veggie dog if you will! I’ve pair up the meal with some potato salad, a dab of Fallot Grain Mustard, a spoonful of L’Epicurien shallot confit, ketchup and an oatmeal and cranberry cookie from Kessler Cookies.
Try it at home and make it your own!

Halloween ideas – Spooky Witches Fingers, Melting Witch Soup & Monster Pillows!
My guest blogger is Darlene Rosen from Honey Girl Kitchen. Check out her recipes for Spooky Witches Fingers (sugar cookies), Melting Witch Soup (green of course) and monsters pillows (pumpkin spiced empanadas which are to die for!). Of course if you don’t have time to make these yourself, you can always order from Honey Girl Kitchen.
Tei-An (with kids…gasp!)
Pikelet would sooner have a platter of sushi than a tray of cupcakes. For his 6th birthday we did the unthinkable. On a whim we decided to whisk the whole family off to Tei-An at One Arts Plaza, on a busy Saturday night without a reservation! We were playing with fire taking kids to a place we only reserve for date night.
Upon arrival, we sheepishly told the hostess we didn’t have a reservation but Pikelet just had to have their stellar sushi for his birthday dinner.
Gourmet Fast Food: Linguine with Lump Crab Meat, Asparagus & Avocado
Making a nice meal doesn’t always have to take a long time. This linguine recipe with lump crab meat, asparagus and avocado lets you create a meal in the time it takes to boil pasta. Now that’s what I call fast food.
