Zen Baking Company Deep Ellum

by Cheryl Collett, Itty Bitty Foodies - Yummy Adventures with Kids!

“We don’t sell anything that we won’t give to our own kids” says owners of Zen Baking Company, Chonnie Richey and Czarina Hounsel. The sisters bake their own breads for sandwiches, Filipino brioche, pastries, cookies and cake balls. Smoothies are made with creamy Greek strained Fage yogurt (pronounced ‘fa-yeh’) and fresh fruits.

IttyBittyFoodies were there on Zen Baking Company’s opening day during the Deep Ellum Arts festival. The cafe is a breath of calm to the grunge and edginess of Deep Ellum. The serene dark cacao colored walls envelope like the aroma from their cake balls. The cafe is surprising bigger than it looks from the outside. A bar splits the space in half – tables and chairs to dine on side side and on the other is a haven for downtown denizens looking for a lounge to sip on caffeinated bubble teas, coffee or wine.

For the kids though, Tuesdays are Mommy (or Daddy) & Me days where children receive free cookies and milk. Bright pepper red highchairs are provided and a small area for kids to do their crafts are great for playdate lunches. And if you forget to buy cakeballs to go, you can find Zen Baking Company’s cakeballs at Central Market. IttyBittyFoodies, recommends the Bitty Bites Cake Balls - it comes in all the same flavors are your regular cake balls only … itty bitty.

Till our next Happy Meal!

  1. Love to hear “We don’t sell anything that we won’t give to our own kids”…as this is my theme, too. When it comes to bread I make sure there is no ‘high fructose corn syrup’ it’s disappointing that this ingredient is so freely used when it can easily be left out. Thanks for the write up look forward to visiting Zen Baking Company.

  2. Can’t wait to try it. Looks yummy!

  3. oh looks so fun! can’t wait to try it out with my girls!
