Moon cakes = Swoon cakes!

Mini mooncakes are best of itty bitty foodies

It’s the start of the Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival! According to the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month which is around end of September or October. This year it’s September 22nd. If you look at the night sky you’ll see the bright bold moon, proudly proclaiming its festival.

During this time, it is customary to eat mooncakes: small round cakes filled with a sweet lotus seed, red bean or date paste and encased in a thin shiny amber skin. Individual mooncakes are around 4 inches in diameter but I’ve seen mini ones (less than 2 inches in diameter) which come in a box set. The filling is so dense and rich that the only way to eat them is to slice them into small pieces. And finish off the meal with a small cup of chamomile or chrysanthemum tea.

This delicacy is labor intensive to make so most people (like yours truly) will buy them from the local Asian supermarket. Share it on your playdates and try it for yourself! For Pikelet, they may as well have been called ’swoon cakes’ while Lollo… thought they were a ‘no no’.

Till our next happy meal!

  1. hmm, i’m definitely with Lollo on this one. i’ve never been a fan of the red bean paste. but i’d be willing to give the date paste a try.

  2. Charlie is with Lollo too!
